How to Calculate Square Footage of a Wall (All Wall Types Covered)
Wall area starts with width x height, but the right measurement changes by project. Paint, wallpaper, tile, and drywall do not treat doors, windows, ceilings, and pattern waste the same way.
This is the general wall-area page. For floor shape measurement, use how to calculate square footage of a room. For paint buying, use the paint guide after you know the wall area.
Same wall, different measurement rule. Pick your project to see the rule that matters first.
Use net wall area, then multiply by coat count when estimating gallons.
The Core Formula
Wall area = width (ft) x height (ft). A 12 ft wide by 9 ft high wall is 108 sq ft. If that wall has one standard door and one standard window, the net wall area can be 108 - 21 - 15 = 72 sq ft.
The hook is this: whether you subtract doors and windows depends on the material. Paint usually subtracts them. Wallpaper usually does not. Drywall usually does not. Tile subtracts large openings but often ignores tiny fixtures.

What You'll Need
Use a 25 ft tape measure, pencil, graph paper, calculator, and step ladder for tall walls. A laser distance measurer is useful for high entries, stairwells, and rooms where furniture blocks one wall. Before you take numbers, sketch each wall face and mark every door, window, fireplace, built-in, slope, or curve. That small sketch prevents missed openings and helps you apply the right deduction rules later.
Step 1 - Measure a Standard Wall
Single Flat Wall
For one flat wall, measure the full width from corner to corner and the full height from floor to ceiling. A 14 ft x 9 ft wall is 126 sq ft. Measure to the nearest 1/2 inch. For paint, wallpaper, and tile, measure to the floor even if baseboard or trim will be handled separately.
All Four Walls of a Room
The most accurate method is to measure each wall separately. The fast estimate is perimeter x ceiling height: (14 + 12 + 14 + 12) x 9 = 52 x 9 = 468 sq ft. The two methods match in a clean rectangle, but separate wall entries are better when doors, windows, or built-ins need decisions.
| Wall | Width | Height | Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| North wall | 14 ft | 9 ft | 126 sq ft |
| South wall | 14 ft | 9 ft | 126 sq ft |
| East wall | 12 ft | 9 ft | 108 sq ft |
| West wall | 12 ft | 9 ft | 108 sq ft |
| Total | - | - | 468 sq ft |
| Opening | Standard Size | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Standard door | 3 ft x 7 ft | 21 sq ft |
| Double door | 6 ft x 7 ft | 42 sq ft |
| Sliding glass door | 6 ft x 8 ft | 48 sq ft |
| Standard window | 3 ft x 4 ft | 12 sq ft |
| Large window | 4 ft x 5 ft | 20 sq ft |
| Picture window | 5 ft x 6 ft | 30 sq ft |
| Fireplace opening | 4 ft x 4 ft | 16 sq ft |
| Opening | Paint | Wallpaper | Tile | Drywall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard door | Deduct | Do not deduct | Deduct | Do not deduct |
| Window | Deduct | Do not deduct | Deduct | Do not deduct |
| Fireplace | Deduct | Deduct | Deduct | Deduct |
| Small opening under 5 sq ft | Do not deduct | Do not deduct | Do not deduct | Do not deduct |
Step 2 - Handle Special Wall Shapes
Sloped / Cathedral Walls
Split the wall into a rectangle and a triangle. Rectangle area = width x vertical height. Triangle area = 1/2 x width x triangle height. For a 12 ft wall, 5 ft vertical height, and 4 ft triangle height: 12 x 5 = 60 sq ft, and 1/2 x 12 x 4 = 24 sq ft, for 84 sq ft.
/\
/ \ triangle height
/____\
| |
| | vertical height
|____|
widthCurved Walls
For a curved wall, calculate arc length, then multiply by height. Arc length = 2Ï€ x radius x (angle/360). A quarter-round wall with 8 ft radius and 9 ft height has arc length 2 x 3.14159 x 8 x (90/360) = 12.57 ft, so wall area is 113.1 sq ft. For a rough estimate, use the outside rectangle; it may run 20-30% high.
Bay Window Walls
Measure each face separately. Example: main wall left 3 x 9 = 27 sq ft, main wall right 3 x 9 = 27 sq ft, left return 2 x 9 = 18 sq ft, front face 4 x 9 = 36 sq ft, right return 2 x 9 = 18 sq ft. Total:126 sq ft. For paint or wallpaper, subtract the bay window glass if it is large.
Staircase Walls
A straight staircase wall often behaves like a parallelogram. Area = base length x vertical height. If the wall runs 15 ft along the stairs and the vertical height is 8 ft, area = 120 sq ft. Measure vertical height, not the sloped face height. Wallpaper on staircase walls is difficult, so a 25% waste allowance is common.
Step 3 - Adjust for Your Project Type
Calculating Wall Area for Paint
Paint uses net wall area. For a 12 x 14 ft room with 9 ft ceiling, total walls are (12+14+12+14) x 9 = 468 sq ft. Subtract one door and two windows: 468 - 45 = 423 sq ft. Add a 12 x 14 ceiling if needed: 423 + 168 = 591 sq ft. Two coats = 1,182 sq ft. At 350 sq ft per gallon, that is 3.38, so buy 4 gallons. For the full buying workflow, see how much paint do I need.
Calculating Wall Area for Wallpaper
Wallpaper usually uses gross wall area because drops must align across doors and windows. A 468 sq ft room with a 12 inch pattern repeat gets a 15% allowance: 468 x 1.15 = 538.2 sq ft. If each roll covers 28 sq ft, 538.2 ÷ 28 = 19.2 rolls, so buy 20 rolls.
| No pattern (solid) | 0% |
| Small repeat under 6" | +10% |
| Medium repeat 6-18" | +15% |
| Large repeat over 18" | +20% |
Calculating Wall Area for Tile
Tile uses net wall area, but only large openings should be subtracted. A tiny fixture creates cutting work, so keeping it in the area is often more realistic. For tile buying, use how to calculate tile. For tile surface measurement across floors, showers, and backsplashes, use how to calculate square footage for tile.
Calculating Wall Area for Drywall
Drywall usually uses gross wall area because 4 x 8 sheets are installed and openings are cut out. A 4 x 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. For a 468 sq ft room, add 10% waste: 468 x 1.10 = 514.8 sq ft. Divide by 32: 514.8 ÷ 32 = 16.1 sheets, so buy 17 sheets.
How to Calculate Wall Area for an Entire Room
For a full room, measure length, width, and height; calculate each wall or use perimeter x height; then decide whether the ceiling belongs in the project. A ceiling is normally part of paint math, but not part of wallpaper, wall tile, or wainscoting unless the design explicitly includes it.
| Surface | Calculation | Area |
|---|---|---|
| North wall | 20 x 9 | 180 sq ft |
| South wall | 20 x 9 | 180 sq ft |
| East wall | 16 x 9 | 144 sq ft |
| West wall | 16 x 9 | 144 sq ft |
| Ceiling | 16 x 20 | 320 sq ft |
| Total with ceiling | - | 968 sq ft |
| Subtract 1 door + 2 windows | 21 + 24 | -45 sq ft |
| Net area for paint | - | 923 sq ft |

Common Wall Measurement Mistakes
1. Using the same measurement for every project type
Estimated cost: Paint, wallpaper, tile, and drywall can differ by 10-20%.Paint usually subtracts doors and windows. Wallpaper and drywall often do not. The wall is the same, but the material logic is different.
2. Forgetting ceiling height
Estimated cost: A 1 ft height error can add 50+ sq ft in a large room.Do not assume every room has 8 ft ceilings. Measure actual height, especially in newer homes, basements, entries, and vaulted rooms.
3. Ignoring sloped ceilings
Estimated cost: Sloped walls can be undercounted by 15-30%.A cathedral wall may include a rectangle plus a triangle. Measuring only the vertical section misses the upper wall area.
4. Measuring only visible wall area
Estimated cost: Wallpaper and drywall can run short behind furniture or cabinets.Measure the wall surface, not just what you can see today. Movable furniture is not a permanent deduction.
5. Subtracting doors and windows for wallpaper
Estimated cost: Pattern matching can leave you 1-2 rolls short.Wallpaper waste is driven by drops and repeat alignment. Openings still interrupt the pattern and consume usable material.
6. Forgetting the ceiling when ordering paint
Estimated cost: A second paint run can create batch or sheen mismatch.Ceiling paint is often separate from wall paint, but it still needs its own square footage and coat count.
7. Using the perimeter formula in irregular rooms
Estimated cost: Irregular rooms can be off by 20% or more.Perimeter x height is fast for rectangles. For angled, curved, stair, or bay window walls, measure each wall face separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the square footage of a wall?1
Measure the wall width and height in feet, then multiply width by height. For a 12 ft by 9 ft wall, 12 x 9 = 108 sq ft. Whether you subtract doors and windows depends on the project type.
How do I calculate wall area for painting?2
Calculate total wall area, subtract doors and windows, add ceiling area if you are painting the ceiling, then multiply by the number of coats before converting to gallons.
How do I calculate wall area for wallpaper?3
Use gross wall area and usually do not subtract doors or windows. Wallpaper needs extra material for pattern repeat, drop matching, and trimming around openings.
How do I calculate drywall for a room?4
Use gross wall area, usually without subtracting doors and windows, add about 10% waste, then divide by the square footage per drywall sheet. A 4 x 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft.
How do I measure a sloped ceiling wall?5
Split the wall into a rectangle and a triangle. Calculate width x vertical height for the rectangle, then 1/2 x width x triangle height for the sloped top.
What is the square footage of a 12x12 room's walls?6
With 8 ft ceilings, four 12 ft walls equal (12 + 12 + 12 + 12) x 8 = 384 sq ft. After one standard door and two standard windows, the net wall area is about 339 sq ft.
Should I include the ceiling when calculating wall square footage?7
Only if the project includes the ceiling. Paint projects often include ceiling area. Wallpaper, tile, and wainscoting usually do not unless the ceiling is part of the design.
How do I calculate wall area for a staircase?8
A straight staircase wall can often be treated like a parallelogram: base length times vertical height. Wallpaper on staircase walls usually needs extra waste.
How many square feet of drywall do I need for a 12x12 room?9
A 12x12 room with 8 ft ceilings has 384 sq ft of wall area. Add 10% waste to get 422.4 sq ft, then divide by 32 sq ft per 4x8 sheet, which gives 13.2 sheets, so buy 14 sheets.
